Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
